Berdie Martine imported this car and raced it in 1957. Berdie Martin says, “Frank Nichols [founder of Elva Cars] was a very good friend and I was the original importer of [this] Elva Mk II. It was the first Mk II to come into the United States and I kept it for my own use. I believe it was 1956 or 1957 when it arrived in Chicago, and I think I sold it to Frank Campbell the following year.”
Berdie adds, "I ordered the vehicle in red and added a wide black stripe with small white borders all the way down the center of the car. I designed the headrest which was a good bit smaller than what Frank Nichols used on the Elva MK III which replaced [this car] when I sold it. As a distributor and dealer, I generally got the first, or one of the first, of the new model Elva vehicles."
Frank Campbell and Chuck Dietrich raced the car at the 1958 and 1959 "Road America 500" and other Midwest courses.
There is no sound history of the car from Campbell's ownership in 1958 to 1980. Someone during these mystery years modified the body with a KAMM treatment and Bob Engberg heard a rumor that the car was once SAAB powered and had done some hill climbs.
There may have been connection with the car to J. Michale Kruger and Jake Jacobson in the mid 1960's.
Frank Campbell sold the car in 1980 to John Lindsey of Toronto.
John sold it to the late Dick Miller in the mid-1970s.
Dick sold it to Bob Grunau in 1990. Bob Grunau did the restoration and raced the car in several Canadian vintage events.
Bob Engberg purchased the car in 2006. He participated in the 2007 and 2008 Monterey Historics, the 2008 Coronado Speed Festival, and in several HMSA and CSRG events including the Portland Historics. In March 2008, Bob and the Elva participated in the "Elva Legends at Sebring 50th Anniversary”.
